Spacious 435 Square Foot Apartment

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Small Apartment 1

It is Thursday, and the New York Times Homes section takes usually takes us into million dollar designer digs; it is a nice change to see a modest 435 square foot home for three that cost far less. It doesn’t look small, and according to the Times, actually appears spacious, airy and serene. A friend describes it: “To me, what’s lovely about this space is that someone born in India and someone born in Holland, both with a design sense, have created a space that feels very Japanese, that reflects the Japanese ability to live in small spaces gracefully.”

“Each space - for sleeping, cooking, eating, and socializing - is separate, and yet it flows together seamlessly in what anybody else would call a very small space.”

Camera on a Bench Beckons Strangers to Take Photos

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Stranger Photos

Jay Carlson of ‘The Plug’ tied a disposable camera to a bench with a sign asking people to take photos. When he came back later that evening, the entire roll of film had been shot.

Coolest Business Card Ever

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Business Card 1

Remember the Chia Pet? Jamie Wieck created the business card equivalent. The Growing Business Card has all your usual phone/e-mail/address information, of course, with one extra feature: plant life. After dipping the card in water, some alfalfa or cress will be popping out of the top within a few days.

Business Card 2

The simple instructions for getting the card to grow adorn (fill dish with water, dip card in) one side of the card, encouraging your contacts to actually pull out your card after you give it to them.

Compact Living Concept Matroshka

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Matroshka 1

The Matroshka has the potential to revolutionize storage and maximize quality of living, especially for those in confined dwellings. It can become as small as 4 square meters and houses a bookshelf, double bed, sofa, dinner table, four stools, desk, wardrobe and a bunch of storage. The target group for this product are people living in overcrowded lodgings: particularly students, big city dwellers or commuters. It can also be used in more conventional dwellings to maximize space in the guest room, children’s room or study area. It is also a smart solution to allow more flexibility in pre-furnished apartments.

Not quite as portable as the Apartment-In-a-Box, but certainly looks a lot more livable.

Clever Staircase Bookshelves

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Staircase Bookshelf

Three Czech designers have created an intelligent alternating tread staircase that doubles as bookshelves. Although it isn’t quite as impressive as London’s staircase library, I think it has a humble charm all its own.

It is by Adam Jirkal, Jerry Koza and Tomas Kalhous in what looks like a renovation and addition in Vsenory, Czech Republic. The stair appears to be made of slats of wood bolted together. Oh, to have building codes that let a thousand architectural flowers bloom.

Striped Icebergs Look Awesome

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Iceberg 1

These stunning banded icebergs - formed over hundreds, if not thousands, of years - were pictured floating in the waters of the Antarctic.

Some of the stripes formed when layers of the iceberg melted and refroze. Others were created from the dust and soil picked up when the ice sheet that gave birth to the iceberg was sliding down an Antarctic hillside.

They were photographed by Norwegian sailor Oyvind Tangen, on board a research ship around 1,700 miles south of Cape Town and 660 miles north of the Antarctic.

“It reminds me of striped candy I bought as a child,” said 62-year-old Mr Tangen.

Real-Life Simpsons House

Simpsons House 1

I stumbled across these photos and they looked strangely familiar, but I couldn’t tell where I had seen that house before. After some research I found out Fox and Pepsi built this house for a contest that a woman named Barbara H. won. The house is located in Nevada and it is an exact replica of The Simpsons house. How cool is that!

The Tough Guy Race

Tough Guy Race 3

‘Tough Guy’ is a traditional English challenge, in which the participants have to use every ounce of their energy just to get to the finish line. To give you an idea of how tough this event is, the promoters say that the US S.E.A.L.S. “Grinder” Assault Course is the only thing that barely comes close in terms of difficulty.

New ‘Big Brother’ Camera Sees Directly Into Your Soul

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Camera

A camera that can “see” explosives, drugs and weapons hidden under clothing from 25 meters has been invented.

The ThruVision system could be deployed at airports, railway stations or other public spaces.

It is based on so-called “terahertz”, or T-ray, technology, normally used by astronomers to study dying stars.

Although it is able to see through clothes it does not reveal “body detail” or subject people to “harmful radiation”, according to the designers.

First Look at Vast ‘Book of Life’

Posted under Slices of Awesome

Flower

The first 30,000 pages have been unveiled of a vast encyclopedia which aims to catalog every one of our planet’s 1.8 million species.

The immense online resource is designed to greatly enhance our understanding of the world’s diminishing biodiversity.

The creators of the database say it could have an impact on human knowledge comparable to that which followed the microscope’s invention in the 1600s.

It is designed to be used by everyone from scientists to lay readers.

The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) - described as the “ultimate field guide” - is to encompass all six kingdoms of life, and even viruses - which many researchers do not consider to be living organisms.
